The mandate
This was a self-directed series made to answer a commercial question: could I produce levitation and compositing work at campaign quality with no studio, no crew and no budget, entirely by hand in Photoshop.
The insight
Conceptualized a visual narrative focusing on the physical suspension of everyday household objects to represent the invisible weight of mental overload
My role + craft
Photography, Photo manipulation, Surrealism · for Personal work · 2020. Concept, direction and hands-on execution.
The result
A complete conceptual series photographed and composited entirely by hand, with no studio, crew or budget
01Brief

This was a self-directed series made to answer a commercial question: could I produce levitation and compositing work at campaign quality with no studio, no crew and no budget, entirely by hand in Photoshop. Every frame was photographed and composited manually, pre-AI, which meant the honest test was whether the craft held up at full size, where compositing mistakes show. The subject, the emotional weight of ordinary domestic life, had to stay readable rather than turning into a technical exercise.

02Approach
  1. 01Conceptualized a visual narrative focusing on the physical suspension of everyday household objects to represent the invisible weight of mental overload
  2. 02Photographed each element in a controlled environment to ensure consistent lighting direction, exposure, and shadow placement across all composite frames
  3. 03Merged multiple high-resolution exposures in Adobe Photoshop to remove physical supports and construct realistic levitation effects
  4. 04Managed the colour grading to keep the tones of the domestic scenes muted, heavy, and quiet
03Outcomes
  • A complete conceptual series photographed and composited entirely by hand, with no studio, crew or budget
  • Proof that campaign-level compositing can be delivered in-house rather than outsourced to retouchers
  • A portfolio asset that has since won me commercial compositing and art direction work
  • Techniques from the series became teaching material for my Photoshop classes at Fanshawe College
