01Brief
As Professor, Advanced Photoshop at Fanshawe College I taught third and fourth-year students who arrived able to use the tools but not to finish work at a professional standard. The course had to bridge that gap inside one term: not feature tours, but the compositing, retouching and decision-making discipline that commercial and editorial work actually demands, taught to a mixed-ability room using real project workflows from my own practice.
02Approach
- 01Developed a curriculum focused on real-world compositing scenarios rather than generic tool tutorials to bridge the gap between software knowledge and creative execution
- 02Constructed multi-layered digital art examples to demonstrate non-destructive editing, advanced masking, and colour-matching principles
- 03Instructed working design professionals on how to maintain consistent lighting, perspective, and scale when combining disparate photographic assets
- 04Mentored students on file organization and layer management to ensure final assets remain fully editable in team production environments
03Outcomes
- Advanced Photoshop curriculum built and delivered from live professional project workflows, not software feature tours
- Students finishing portfolio-standard composite work inside a single term
- Teaching materials drawn directly from client and self-directed projects including The Drawing Hope Project and Domestic Chaos
- A repeatable course framework the college could run across cohorts
